Dear Friend,
Nuclear Waste Transportation and Northern Ontario
Postcard campaign to raise awareness about transportation risks
We are almost ready to go with our second postcard campaign!
We’ve just sent our rough design and content to the designer, and hope that our next awareness postcard will be landing in 50,000 mailboxes early this spring – just a few weeks from now!
But we still need help. We received many generous donations in response to our year-end appeal, and we are more than half-way there, but we are still $3,000 short for our first target for funding postcard printing and mailing.
Our first target is to reach 50,000 households on the transportation route leading to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s candidate nuclear waste burial site between Ignace and Dryden. The NWMO won’t disclose their intended route, and it’s likely that they will use more than one, but Highways 622, 17 and 11 are almost certain to be on the NWMO maps.

Why do we favour postcards?
Well, during our initial postcard campaign in 2021 we learned that a great many people did not know about the NWMO’s project until our information arrived in their mailbox. And while the NWMO has been concentrating their funding and promotional efforts in the Ignace and Dryden area, the transportation risks for the NWMO affect a vastly larger area. Residents along the transportation route deserve to know what could be coming their way: current estimates are 45 years of 2-3 trucks per day hauling radioactive waste along our highways, through our communities, crossing our rivers and following our shorelines. |
Residents of Northern Ontario have a right to know. And we should have a right to say “No”.
Our ultimate fundraising goal for this transportation postcard is $12,000 – which will allow us to reach 100,000 households. It’s a lot, but we have a plan to get started with the postcard distribution when we reach the half-way mark ($6,000), and then just keep expanding our distribution as more financial help arrives. We can do a lot with a little money because we are a group of dedicated volunteers.
Can you help?
A $10 donation covers every household in Shebandowan, $50 would reach every house in Ignace, and $200 would let us deliver to every residence in Atikokan. We’ve set an ambitious first target, but town by town and village by village we can cover the entire route with your help.
We’ve set up a GoFundMe page, and can also receive funds by email ([email protected]) through Interac eTransfer or through our charitable partner (select "We the Nuclear Free North" under 'Fund"). Charitable tax receipts are available for all donation methods except GoFundMe - we guarantee that the funds will be used only for educational purposes.

Thanks in advance for your help. We know you share our love and respect for Northern Ontario, and we are grateful for your support.
For a future,
We the Nuclear Free North

For a future,
We the Nuclear Free North
We the Nuclear Free North is an alliance of people and groups against the proposed deep geological repository for nuclear waste in Northwestern Ontario. We oppose the transport, burial and abandonment of the wastes in our northern watersheds. We seek to engage the public in a discussion of the risks of this proposal. We demand transparency from agencies responsible for the production and management of such waste. We invite you to join us. Future generations rely on us!
